New Providence Island in the Bahamas is home to some 200,000 people and about half as many cars. Nassau, the capital, covers most of the eastern side of the island and is steadily expanding westwards mainly as a result of increasing demand for housing.

Travelling across Nassau (~6 miles) in the peak periods can regularly take in excess of 1 hour and as the population and car ownership increases, the fear is that the situation is going to get worse.

In 1999, Mott MacDonald were asked to investigate a total of 19 new or improved road corridors and provide advice on the benefits each would provide to the local residence.

To achieve this, a CONTRAM model was constructed of the whole island, and each of the proposed corridors tested separately and as a whole to provide comparative travel time statistics. From these, and other information available (environmental issues, scheme costs, etc), decision will be made as to which of the corridors will be constructed.
